The Delhi Chief Minister, Sheila Dikshit, inaugurating the new office complex of the Society for Protection of Cruelty to Animals near Tis Hazari on Saturday.
The complex has been built by Delhi Metro in lieu of land provided to it for one of the pillars on the upcoming Tis Hazari -Tri Nagar Line. The two-storey office complex houses transit facilities for treatment and stay of animals as well as the general office. Also present at the inaugural function were former Union Minister and Rajya Sabha member, Dr. Karan Singh, the Delhi Development Minister, Haroon Yusuf, MLA Prahlad Singh, local councillor Neetu Verma, and the SPCA Chairman, H.R. Khajuria. Speaking on the occasion, the Chief Minister informed the gathering that the SPCA was among the first institutionalised responses in India to the challenge of providing protection to animals against cruelty. She further said that the Society had undertaken a record collection of Rs. 2 crore through animal courts. To deal with the problem of water scarcity faced by the Society, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has installed a tubewell at a cost of Rs. 4 lakhs. It has also re-opened an SPCA clinic at Daryaganj.
