Addressing a press conference here, Mr. Achuthanandan said if there is no system for such a probe, the Government should take the initiate to put such a system in place. The CPI(M) leader said that the Vigilance probe that looked into allegations of Prof. Thomas amassing wealth disproportionate to his known sources of income, had accepted at face value the submission by Prof. Thomas that the latter had received Rs. 6 lakhs as honorarium from the INTUC for being its office-bearer. Likewise the travelling allowance bills submitted by the Minister during his two terms as Member of Parliament had also been included as "income'' with 40 per cent deduction though it was blatantly illegal, he added. According to Mr. Achuthanandan, the department itself had found that the Minister had excess wealth to the tune of nearly Rs. 3 lakhs over and above his known sources of income.
