"All the parties are identical in their effort to keep principles in their pockets. Even the Left parties that cherished certain values are no different now. The existing political situation has reached such a state, where they have no qualms about joining hands with those who were thought to be corrupt till the other day," Mr. Purushothaman said while delivering the T.C. Narayanan Nambiar memorial speech organised by the T.C. Foundation here today. Lamenting that the quality of political activities had declined over the years as political leaders gave importance to transient political gains, Mr. Purushothaman said, "Some people have no hesitation to work against their own party and the candidate fielded by it.'' The oblique reference by the Speaker to the stand of the senior Congress leader, K. Karunakaran, on the party's candidate in the Ernakulam Lok Sabha by-election and the LDF's willingness to offer support to him did not go unnoticed. The CPI leader, Binoy Viswom, who was present at the function said during his speech that the LDF was just playing its role as an Opposition when the UDF Government was facing a crisis created by its own policies. "The Government is losing its creativity every day. We are not manipulators, but we cannot stay indifferent when the Government is heading for a deep crisis thanks to its own anti-people policies," Mr. Viswom said. He, however, agreed with the view of the Speaker on the decline in values in politics. Recollecting the memories of the late freedom fighter and legislator, T.C. Narayanan Nambiar, the Speaker said though the late leader had been a Marxian to the core, he also shared certain Gandhian ideals. Remembering such individuals was appropriate at a time when principles were on the decline, he added. The T.C. Foundation president, Kottiyath Sadanandan, presided over the function.
