LUCKNOW SEPT. 20. Three International Masters — S. Satyapragyan, Dinesh Sharma and T. S. Ravi — crashed to defeats in the second round leaving 34 leaders on the second day of the 24th Pilloo Mody international rating chess tournament at the Moti Mahal hall here on Saturday.

Satyapragyan threw away a comfortable position to lose to Swaraj Palit and Dinesh Sharma allowed too many liberties to K. Ramu in the middle game and resigned when faced with an inevitable checkmate.

Ravi, inching towards a comfortable victory after gaining a rook for a bishop against Mithilesh Srivastava, lost his rook due to an oversight and with it, the match. S. Poobesh Anand was the other IM who failed to post his second straight victory after being held by Rajkamal Singh.

Meanwhile the seeding for the tournament had to revised with the withdrawal of third seed, Woman Grandmaster S. Vijayalakshmi and with her, top seed Sriram Jha. Last night, Vijayalakshmi had to rush to Chennai after learning that her father had suffered a mild stroke. Her good friend Jha chose to be her escort till Delhi.

As a result, R.B. Ramesh heads the list of seeds. After yesterday's slow start, Ramesh was in his elements and easily won against Rohan Shandilya. Later in the evening, the scheduled third round was cancelled due to electricity failure at the venue.
