Probe Koyambedu land ownership, TNCC tells CM

By Our Staff Reporter

CHENNAI SEPT 20. The Tamil Nadu Congress Committee (TNCC) president, S. Balakrishnan, today wrote to the Chief Minister, Jayalalithaa urging the government to conduct an enquiry into the alleged corruption in granting layout permits to a private company in Koyambedu.

In his letter, Mr. Balakrishnan said the fact that the Chennai Corporation was yet to take over the open space reservation (OSR) land based on the layout proposed by the private company in Koyambedu was itself indicative of problems. He further said the D.R.O. (Land and Estate), who runs his office from the Ripon Building, had himself objected to the resolution seeking taking over of the OSR land.

"What was the necessity for the Town Planning Committee headed by P. Vetrivel of AIADMK to hurriedly pass the resolution when objections were being raised?" he asked.

Further, he pointed out that another resolution placed by the Town Planning Committee was withdrawn at the last moment during the Corporation council meeting in July. Mr. Balakrishnan alleged that Mr. Vetrivel and senior officials of Town Planning department had indulged in large-scale corruption while trying to pass the resolution, which had to be stalled in the last moment when the Opposition councillors were prepared to raise objections.

The resolution was not taken up in last month's meeting also. However, the owner of private land had advertised in a Tamil daily that the layout was authorised by the Chennai Corporation even before the July council meet, his statement released to the press added.
