Decision on original licence deferred

By P.Oppili

CHENNAI SEPT. 20. The city police have deferred `by a few days' implementation of their decision mandating motorists to carry with them original driving licences With the motorists taking exception to the announcement, detailing the problems involved in carrying the original driving licence, especially for those possessing old book-type licences, the police have been forced to reconsider the September 22 deadline. A meeting with Transport department officials would be organised and thereafter a final decision made, said the Police Commissioner, K. Vijay Kumar.

Already the police approached some two-wheeler manufacturers to explore the possibility of introducing a safety mechanism in the vehicles without any additional cost. They were also looking at fixing an electronic lock, which could be operated only by the owner, he said. Any suggestion on original driving licences can be mailed to the Commissioner at: commissionerofpolice_chennai@hotmail.com
