Pak. invites PM

By B. Muralidhar Reddy

ISLAMABAD Sept. 20. Pakistan today formally invited the Prime Minister, Atal Bihari Vajpayee, to visit Islamabad in the first week of January to participate in the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) Summit.

An invitation by the Pakistan Prime Minister, Mir Zafarullah Khan Jamali, addressed to Mr. Vajpayee was delivered by the Pakistan Foreign Office to the Deputy High Commissioner of India, T.C.A. Raghavan.

The Pakistan Foreign Minister, Khurshid Mehmood Kasuri, who intended to travel to New Delhi to personally invite Mr. Vajpayee, dropped his plans after India indirectly made it known that it would not be comfortable with the idea given the delicate nature of relations between the two countries. Taking umbrage at the comments made by the Foreign Secretary, Kanwal Sibal, that it was not required for Mr. Kasuri to visit India, Pakistan issued a strong statement accusing India of "not being sincere in its peace initiative and undermining the SAARC traditions".
