Number of MMTS coaches likely to be reduced

From Our Staff Reporter

Hyderabad Sept. 20. The South Central Railways is contemplating to reduce the number of coaches in the MMTS trains from six to three in view of the poor occupancy rate. At present 12,000 to 14,000 passengers are travelling on an average per day. "The position would be reviewed after a month and a decision taken," said T. Stanley Babu, General Manager, SCR.

He told presspersons here on Saturday that the passenger occupancy on the MMTS was not to "our satisfaction". The early morning service between 4 a.m. to 5 a.m. was hardly used. Same was the case with the 11 a.m. to 12 noon service. A detail survey of passengers, station wise had been done. If the traffic did not come to the expected level then the railways would be forced to cut down the number of coaches, as there was heavy consumption of power.

"We cannot run empty trains. It will not serve either the people or the railways. The system has to be rationalised," Mr. Babu said. He said in some places such as Borabanda, Hitec City, Fatehnagar, Bhratnagar the approach roads were not proper and the feeder services were unsatisfactory. It was proposed to make minor adjustment in the train timings to provide connectivity to Krishna Express and A.P. Express. The next meeting of the Joint Task Force would be held on Monday to sort out all these issues, he said.

He said the rail cum road combined ticket tariff would be finalised soon in consultation with the RTC. For final approval the matter would be referred to the Railway Board.
