"The position of the Speaker is inside the Assembly, and there I' am impartial," Mr. Purushothaman said.
The Speaker made these observations while responding to questions on his reported statement that Congress workers who were working against the party candidate in the Ernakulam by-poll should quit the party.
Reiterating his statement, Mr. Purushothaman said certain Congress leaders who were working against the party candidate in Ernakulam were not quitting the party out of fear that they would lose their positions.
He termed the CPI(M) statement of giving a red-carpet welcome to Mr. Karunakaran as a manifestation of the degeneration that had set in in the political field.
"The practice of opposing somebody vehemently for years and one fine morning welcoming them without any reason is indicative of the moral degeneration in society.''
Later, inaugurating the headoffice building of the Thrissur Urban Cooperative Bank (TUCB), the Speaker said that even the cooperative sector was not free from the degeneration that had gripped society.
