Sunil loses in first round

NEW DELHI SEPT. 22. Sunil Kumar went down 3-6, 1-6 to 1004th ranked wild card entrant Murad Inoyatov of Uzbekistan in the first round of the $100,000 Asian tennis championship in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, on Monday.

Mustafa in final qualifying round: The sixth-seeded Mustafa Ghouse made it to the third and final qualifying round of the Futures tennis tournament in Madrid, Spain, with a 6-1, 7-6 (7-1) victory over Javier Encina of Spain.

In the first qualifying round, Mustafa's opponent Sebastian Schluter of Germany retired when the Indian led 6-3, 2-1.

Prakash gets a wild card for Thailand Open: Prakash Amritraj has got a wild card for the $550,000 Thailand Open ATP Tour event in Bangkok. The Indian Davis Cupper will play Nicolas Thomann of France in the first round.

Juniors' poor show: The Indian under-16 boys and girls finished 15th and 16th respectively in the world group competition of the Junior Davis Cup and Junior Fed Cup tennis event in Essen, Germany.

The Indian girls led by Sania Mirza and Ankita Bhambri had finished fifth in the last edition of the championship.

The final placings: Boys: 1. Germany, 2. France, 3. Venezuela, 4. US, 5. Yugoslavia, 6. The Netherlands, 7. Italy, 8. Czech Republic, 9. Colombia, 10. Indoensia, 11. Chinese Taipei, 12. Morocco, 13. Ecuador, 14. Korea, 15. India and 16. Mexico.

Girls: 1. The Netherlands, 2. Canada, 3. Poland, 4. Israel, 5. Germany, 6. Russia, 7. US, 8. Japan, 9. Spain, 10. Uruguay, 11. South Africa, 12. Thailand, 13. Chinese Taipei, 14. Argentina, 15. Brazil and 16. India.

The results (15th place): Boys: India beat Mexico 2-1 (Jeevan Nedunchezian lost to Johnny Hamul 3-6, 0-6; Rupesh Roy bt Miguel Angel Reyes Warela 6-1, 6-1; Sumit Prakash Gupta and Rupesh Roy bt Miguel Angel Reyes Varela and Alberto Rojas 6-4, 6-3).

Girls: Brazil beat India 2-1 (Bruna Paes lost to Sandhya Nagaraj 1-6, 1-6; Tellana Pereira bt Tara Iyer 5-7, 6-4, 6-4; Tellana Pereira and Bruna Paes bt Tara Iyer and Kartiki Bhat 4-6, 7-5, 7-5).
