No party action against Tripathi

New Delhi Sept. 22. The former Uttar Pradesh Minister and now Samajwadi Party legislator, Amarmani Tripathi, found a supporter in the Chief Minister, Mulayam Singh Yadav, with the latter today ruling out any action against the former by the party despite his arrest in the Madhumita murder case.

"Irrespective of the action the Central Bureau of Investigation and the court takes against Mr. Tripathi, the Samajwadi Party will not expel or suspend him," Mr. Yadav told reporters here.

Mr. Tripathi had to "suffer a lot" in the recent past and still gave a helping hand to the Samajwadi Party in "saving the State", Mr. Yadav said. He will continue to be a Samajwadi Party legislator, he added.

Mr. Tripathi was arrested by the CBI on Sunday night in Lucknow for his involvement in the murder of 24-year-old poetess, Madumita Shukla, on May 9. He was a BSP legislator till he joined the Samajwadi Party after the fall of the Mayawati Government.

Remanded

A special CBI court in Lucknow today sent Mr. Tripathi to judicial custody till October 6. The court will tomorrow hear the CBI's plea for Mr. Tripathi's police custody.

The special judicial magistrate, Ram Murti Yadav, read his judgment after hearing the prosecution and the defence in a crowded courtroom.

The petition filed on behalf of Mr. Tripathi, his wife, Madhumani Tripathi, brother Ajeetmani Tripathi, his wife, Madhubalamani Tripathi, and 11 others, seeking direction to permit the presence of two advocates at the time of interrogation by the CBI, would be heard on September 30 by the High Court. — UNI
