142 polling booths identified as hypersensitive in Karwan

Hyderabad Sept. 22. The police have identified 142 polling booths in the Karwan Assembly constituency as hypersensitive, 135 as sensitive and 98 as regular. The hypersensitive booths will be manned by a Sub Inspector, a head constable and three police constables. Other polling booths will also have police security.

Disclosing this to presspersons here on Monday, Vani Prasad, Joint Collector and Returning Officer for Karwan, said liquor sale would be stopped 24 hours before the commencement of polling and Section 144 would be promulgated near the booths on the polling day. Violation of the model code of conduct would be viewed seriously and could result in disqualification of the candidate, she said.

The present election, she said, was unique in that for the first time EPICs were being used and declaration of assets and educational qualifications of the candidates was made compulsory.

She said inspection of the 375 polling booths situated in 116 buildings had been carried out. As many as 51 polling stations were changed in the Karwan constituency. The highest number of 1,495 votes are in polling booth 232 located at the Government Girls High School, Mangalhat, and the lowest of 55 votes are in booth No. 310 at Yanul Adab School, Karwan. The constituency has a total of 2,95,554 electorate besides 95 postal ballots. All the 850 polling staff had been provided training.

The election will take place from 7 a.m to 5 p.m on September 26. Counting will be taken up on September 29 at 8 a.m at the Government Junior College for Girls, Nampally. The first round of counting might take about 45 minutes. In all, there would be 25 rounds, Ms. Prasad said.

Referring to the Electoral Photo Identity Cards (EPICs), she said those who did not possess them could produce any of the 12 alternative documents prescribed by the Election Commission for establishing the identity.
