The retained members include Heizo Takenaka, who has come to be known in the West as the poster hero of Mr. Koizumi's economic reforms. He stays on as the Minister for Financial Services as also Economic and Fiscal Policy, with the Prime Minister resisting the calls from the LDP's conservative veterans for a change in favour of old-style management. Sadakazu Tanigaki was made the Finance Minister. The Chief Cabinet Secretary, Yasuo Fukuda, who had emerged in recent years as Mr. Koizumi's main ally and aide in the Cabinet, retained his post. The retention of Yoriko Kawaguchi as Foreign Minister and Shigeru Ishiba as Defence Agency Director General (or Defence Minister for practical purposes) was also a reflection of continuity in Mr. Koizumi's broadly U.S.-friendly policies in regard to both Iraq and North Korea. Mr. Koizumi is now widely seen to have positioned himself for a snap general election later this year on his own terms which the old-style seniors in his party continue to object to.
