Chautala misusing Govt. funds: IYC

By Our Special Correspondent

CHANDIGARH SEPT. 23. The Indian Youth Congress president, Randeep Singh Surjewala, today charged that the Om Prakash Chautala regime in Haryana was blatantly misusing public funds and Government machinery to celebrate the birth anniversary of his father, the late Deputy Prime Minister, Devi Lal, in Karnal on September 25.

Mr. Surjewala told mediapersons here today that the Chautala Government had wasted over Rs.10 crores of Government's funds to celebrate the occasion. He further alleged that Deputy Commissioners and other senior officials were camping at the rally site in Karnal for the last couple of days. Ruling Indian National Lok Dal workers were extorting money from the public for the function, he added. Boards and corporations besides Government departments had floated tenders for "hoardings'' and "signboards specially for the occasion," he alleged.

Asserting that the Congress and the Youth Congress had no objection to the INLD holding a rally to celebrate the birth anniversary of Devi Lal, he said it was opposed to blatant misuse of public funds and Government machinery. He urged upon Mr.Chautala to furnish complete details of the money spent and to organise a simple function to mark the occasion.

He also announced that Youth Congress activists would take out a protest demonstration in Kurukshetra on September 25 and submit a memorandum to the Kurukshetra University Vice-Chancellor protesting against the Chautala Government's decision to link several colleges in the region with <243>the newly-formed Devi Lal University at Sirsa.
