New Delhi
By Our Staff Reporter
Commissioning a new 66/11 KV grid sub-station of BSES Rajdhani Power Limited at Pappankalan (Dwarka) in West Delhi, she said that during the past five years the Capital's daily power demand had risen from 1,900 MW to 3,200 MW. "The demand for power was increasing at the rate of 10 per cent every year but the supply cannot be increased at the same rate. Unless we stop misusing electricity and check its theft, we could be heading towards a major power crisis," she warned. Stating that work had already started on setting up a new power station of 1,000 MW capacity, the Chief Minister said Delhi's own generation was only 300 MW while the rest of the demand had to be met from other sources. "And if the rate of power consumption continues to rise, all our planning will fail and we will not be able to have surplus power. So, it is high time that we start using power more judiciously. Moreover, purchase of more power from other sources will lead to unnecessary expenditure which could hamper progress of other development projects," she asserted. Commending the private power distribution companies for improvement on load-shedding and supply fronts, the Delhi Power Minister, Ajay Maken, said people's support had led to the success of the power sector reform. "This has also made the State Government more focussed on power generation and its transmission. As a result, Transco's generation has improved by as mush as 20 per cent. Besides, private companies have been more eager in procuring latest equipments and upgrading distribution network besides ensuring increased consumer satisfaction," he added. Speaking on the occasion, Nasirpur MLA, Mahabal Mishra, said the new gird sub-station would improve power supply to several areas in and around Dwarka region. Demanding that the distribution company should open a district centre for power consumers of West Delhi at the same spot, Mr. Mishra said this would greatly help people of the region. He also asked the company to see that all streetlights in the area were repaired before Diwali and other pending works to upgrade power distribution network were completed at the earliest. The company's director, J.P. Chalasani, said the new grid sub-station and a new transformer, to be installed very shortly in the area, would help in stabilising and ensuring quality power supply in the region. They were also planning a drive to see that all meters in their area were working efficiently besides ensuring that all customers' grievances were addressed, he said. "We will also be introducing new facilities like fault locating vehicles and emergency power restorers in all our areas so that power distribution system could be made more efficient."
