"His statement is all the more shocking because it was he who had raised the demand for action when Tripathi was a Minister in the Mayawati-Government," a statement issued by AIDWA said here today. The AIDWA is among the many women's organisations that welcomed the collapse of the BSP-BJP Government in U.P. "However, the Chief Minister's statement in favour of Tripathi clearly indicates that women's security and dignity is of little concern to his Government," the statement said, adding that the implications of the remarks were frightening for women. It was quite possible that encouraged by Mr. Singh's statement, the accused and his supporters would step up pressure on Madhumita's family and the witnesses to give up the case. This will lead to a travesty of justice, it said.
