Mammen Mathai is dead

PATHANAMTHITTA Sept. 23. The Kerala Congress(M) MLA and chairman of the Assembly Petitions Committee, Mammen Mathai, died at the Vellore Christian Medical College (CMC) Hospital this afternoon. He was 52.

Mr. Mathai, who was admitted to the Thiruvananthapuram Medical College on June 30 following a massive cardiac attack, had been in a coma since then. He was shifted to the Vellore CMC on August 5 and breathed his last at 6.45 p.m. today, according to party sources in Thiruvalla.

Mr. Mathai who was elected to the State Assembly from Thiruvalla in the 1991 elections had won the subsequent Assembly polls held in 1996 and 2001.

His father, the late Mukkathil P.C. Mathai of Chathankerry, was a veteran peasant leader.

Mr. Mathai is survived by wife Elizabeth and three children, Dhanya, Divya and Deepu.

Mr. Mathai was a leading criminal lawyer at the Thiruvalla Bar. He was the UDF district committee chairman and Kerala Congress(M) district president.

He had also served as president of Peringra grama panchayat and the Peringara Service Cooperative Bank.

The body of Mr. Mathai will be brought to Thiruvalla tomorrow afternoon and will be laid to rest at the Ebanezer Mar Thoma Church cemetery at Mepral, near Thiruvalla, on Thursday.

The Mar Thoma Metropolitan, Philipose Mar Chrisostum, will lead the funeral service.

Various socio-political leaders have condoled the death of Mr. Mathai.

The Chief Minister, A.K. Antony and his Cabinet colleagues condoled the death of the MLA.

The local MP and AICC secretary, Ramesh Chennithala, and the AICC member, Peelipose Thomas, were among others who condoled the death of Mr. Mathai.
