SPs asked to act on petitions in 15 days

Bangalore Sept. 23. R. Suresh, Principal Secretary to the Government, Department of Public Grievances, has asked all superintendents of police from the districts and heads of departments coming under the Home Department to dispose of petitions submitted by the public within 15 days and file compliance reports.

Mr. Suresh, who reviewed the progress of the disposal of the petitions in various districts and heard some petitioners, expressed his displeasure over the 365 pending cases.

He asked the officers to dispose of petitions within one month.

The Principal Secretary, who addressed a meeting of the police officers at the office of the Director-General and Inspector-General of Police here, said that the Chief Minister's Secretariat was monitoring the action taken on the petitions that came to various departments, including the Police Department. "Accept or reject the petition in just 15 days and inform the same to the Grievances Department.

What I want is compliance from the authorities concerned on the petitions, as I have to submit a report on the progress in disposing of the same to the Chief Minister's Secretariat," he said. He planned to hold such meetings at the DGP's office once in six months.

Mr. Suresh, who has launched a unique programme of meeting the heads of department to speed up the disposal of petitions, plans to conduct a similar meeting at the Bangalore Development Authority.

He is reviewing the work of the BDA on September 29 and he will also hear grievances on the occasion.

The Additional DGP (Administration), S.S. Masali, and the IGP, C. Motiram, briefed him on the progress made in the disposal of petitions. The department received 9,240 petitions between January 1 and June 30. Of these, 8,875 had been disposed of. They related to cases of dowry harassment, seeking police protection, arresting murder accused and non-registration of complaints. Mr. Masali assured Mr. Suresh that the pending petitions would be disposed of within one month and compliance reports filed.

Mr. Motiram told Mr. Suresh that all station house officers in the State had been asked to hold grievance meetings once in a week.

The district-wise list of number of petitions received is as follows: Bangalore Rural 747, Gulbarga 274, Koppal 100, Dakshina Kannada 280, Bidar 180, Mysore city 309, Mysore District 431, Tumkur 560, Kolar 676, Udupi 161, Belgaum 448, Dharwad 220, Bagalkoti 118, Haveri 158, Gadag 106, Dharwad 188, Bijapur 222, Hassan 385, Mandya 478, Kodagu 284, Karwar 136, Chikmagalur 191, Davangere 162, Chitradurga 141, Bellary 220, Shimoga 323, and Raichur 161.
