In a complaint to the State's Chief Electoral Officer, the KPCC General Secretary, H. Abdul Wahab, accused the BJP of attacking its candidate, Gowramma Kashappanavar, and her son, Vijay Kashappanavar, at Chittargi in Hungund constituency on September 21. The complaint against the AIPJD pertains to the disturbances at a meeting addressed by the Congress MP, R.L. Jalappa, at Kyalanoor in Vemgal Assembly Constituency on Monday. The Congress has alleged that some persons, suspected to be members of the BJP or the Sangh Parivar, confronted the KPCC President, B. Janardhana Poojary, at Chittargi. They wanted to know why the Hungund constituency had remained backward and why he had said that he was ready to sacrifice his life for the sake of Muslims. Mr. Poojary tried to reason with them. Once Mr. Poojary left the village, the group attacked Mr. Vijay Kashappanavar. The KPCC has told the Election Commission that everyone had the freedom to express his opinion. The actions of the BJP and the AIPJD were aimed at creating an atmosphere of fear in the two constituencies. The Commission should take serious note of the incidents and ensure free and fair polling on September 26, the Congress has demanded.
Campaigning ends
Our Bijapur Staff Correspondent writes: Meanwhile, campaigning reached its peak before the deadline in Hungund today. A host of leaders and activists from various parties made a last-ditch effort to woo the voters. Top politicians, including the Chief Minister, S.M. Krishna, the former Prime Minister and JD(S) President, H.D. Deve Gowda, the BJP State unit President, H.N. Ananth Kumar, and the Working President of the Janata Party, Vijay Mallya, campaigned in the constituency. Mr. Krishna concluded his campaigning with an appeal to voters send the "right" message to the rest of the State by returning the Congress candidate. Apart from addressing a public meeting at Koodalasangama, Mr. Krishna held indoor meetings with the leaders of different communities. He promised the Ilkal Janajagruti Vedike delegation, which called on him at Alamatti, that their civic demands would be looked into. At the meeting in Koodalasangama, he highlighted his Government's efforts to expedite the Upper Krishna Project. He sought votes on the development plank. Mr. Deve Gowda, the former Union Minister, C.M. Ibrahim, and other JD(S) leaders, took out a march seeking votes for the party candidate, Basavaraj Kadapatti. The party leaders also addressed a public meeting. For the BJP, Mr. Ananth Kumar, the Union Minister of State for Railways, Basanagouda R. Patil Yatnal, the Leader of the Opposition in the Legislative Assembly, Jagadish Shettar, the party's Campaign Committee Chairman, B.S. Yediyurappa, and the party leader, Basavaraj Patil Sedam, took out a march pleading for votes for the party candidate, M.S. Patil. Mr. Mallya, who addressed a public meeting at Ilkal, said he had come to the constituency with an appeal from the former Chief Minister, Ramakrishna Hegde, that the AIPJD's candidate, G.P. Patil, be elected. He alleged that the BJP pursued communal politics while the Congress always made false promises.
