Rain plays spoilsport

VISAKHAPATNAM SEPT. 23. The penultimate day of the last round-robin league matches in the P. Ramachandra Rao Trophy South Zone under-22 tournament here on Tuesday saw rain coming in the way of Tamil Nadu's plan for an outright win against Kerala while Goa seemed to be determined to deny Karnataka an outright win.

Andhra, on par with Tamil Nadu at the top of the table with 22 points, could make only 266 in its first innings and Hyderabad was on 87 for one at the draw of stumps. Determined batting by Hyderabad may deny Andhra even the first innings lead.

At the Zinc Stadium, Tamil Nadu resuming at 329 for six went for quick scoring and declared at 428 for eight with G. Prasanna scoring 85 runs (6 x 2, 4 x 4) and P. Mathews making 42 (4 x 4). The 99 runs came off 15.2 overs. Sujith claimed three wickets and N.J. John and Sahid picked up two wickets each for Kerala.

Kerala was struggling at 34 for two in its reply when heavy rain stopped the play at 11.45 a.m. Vignesh picked up both wickets that fell.

The 128-run lead Karnataka gained over Goa at the Port Stadium after declaring at 324 for eight was bridged by Goa at the end of the day for the loss of four wickets. Sahil Dhuri scored 55 (6 x 1, 4 x 9) and Sher Bahadur Yadav made 37 runs (6 x 1, 4 x2).

Shaik Hussain (63, 4 x 5) and Sameer Ali Khan (48) came up with good knocks to help Andhra reach 266 in its first innings at the Ukku Stadium. Hyderbad made 87 for one in reply.

The scores: Tamil Nadu 428 for eight decl. in 104.4 overs (E. Suresh 137, K. Srivasudeva Doss 133, G. Prasanna 85, P. Mathews 42, Sujith three for 72) vs Kerala 34 for two in 10.3 overs.

Goa 196 and 144 for four in 36 overs (Sahil Dhuri 55, Sher Bahadur Yadav 37) vs Karnataka 324 for eight decl. in 84 overs (Sudhir Rao 72, Bharat Chipli 58, Nidhuvan 44, Vinay Uthappa 31, Swapnil Asnodkar four for 64).
