According to sources, 10 persons were working in the trench on Pillayar Koil Street. At 6.30 p.m., the sides of the trench caved in and they were trapped under the wooden slabs and earth. Firemen and police personnel rescued them and took them to the Royapettah Government Hospital and they were reported to be out of danger.The names of the six were given as Kadirdass, Kuppan, Kandasamy, Tirupathi, Dass and Ravi.
