By Our Staff Reporter

Hyderabad Sept. 23. The Medchal police on Tuesday cracked the mystery behind the murder for gain of an 80-year-old woman, which was reported in the Housing Board colony on August 18, with the arrest of a person, Kattakoyyal Brahmam (36) of Nizamabad district. The suspect was traced during verification of the fingerprints collected from the crime scene, a press release said.

The victim, Sanghamma, was found killed with her head smashed in the house of her son-in-law, Y. Sreeramulu, a retired veterinary doctor. The assailant took away gold ornaments weighing 20 tolas and 40 American dollars from the house. The daytime murder created a sensation in the area.

During the investigation, the police noticed that three murders, committed with similar modus operandi, were reported in BHEL and Lingampally areas in the year 2000. Meanwhile, the fingerprints collected from the scenes of offence matched with that of Brahmam. A hunt was launched to nab Brahmam. The police picked him up on Monday in Medchal town when he came there allegedly to commit a robbery.

Brahmam confessed to the police that he stayed in Kompally area after being released from Nizamabad jail on August 3. He also confessed to stealing a scooter from BHEL area on August 15 and killing the old woman. The entire stolen property was recovered. The Cyberabad Police Commissioner, M. Mahender Reddy, appreciated the good work accomplished by the Alwal ACP, P. Rama Rao, the Medchal Inspector, R. Sudarshan, and the Central Crime Station Inspector, K. Venkataiah.
