Major fire at electronic goods factory

By Our Staff Reporter

BANGALORE Sept. 23. Electronic goods and thermocol packing material were destroyed in a major fire that engulfed Dynamic Electronics Ltd., an ancillary unit of the BPL, at N.S. Palya in Mico Layout police limits on Tuesday afternoon. One employee suffered minor burns.

Twenty-eight fire tenders were used. With no protection barring a headgear, firemen were seen struggling to put out the flames.

Electronic spare parts of television sets, refrigerators, and other articles packed in thermocol were stored in the godown, and employees tried to salvage them.

The Director General of Police (Fire Services), M.D. Singh, said that the plant manager, Kannan, had claimed that short-circuit caused the fire.

Mr. Singh said police would inquire whether the factory had followed fire safety norms. The value of the goods destroyed was yet to be estimated, he added.

About 35 employees were inside the factory when the fire broke out at 2.45 p.m. They rushed out of the godown, and one of them, Venkatesh, suffered minor burns on his face when he tried to put out the initial sparks.

With smoke enveloping the area, the afternoon sky turned grey. Hundreds of people gathered to watch the fire. Traffic policemen and firemen had a hard time getting to the spot as the evening rush-hour traffic choked all roads leading to the factory.

Senior police and fire officials visited the spot. The MICO Layout Police Inspector, Ashok, monitored the fire-fighting operations. "I have been here since 2.55 p.m., and there is no let up in the fire,'' he told The Hindu at around 6 p.m. Residents of the area were worried that the fire would spread.
