Tamil Nadu, which could only secure a first innings lead over Kerala in the drawn match at the Zinc Stadium and gained five points, tied with Karnataka on 26 points. The winner will be decided by the convenor of the South Zone after referring to the rules. Hyderabad's first innings against Andhra at the Ukku Stadium was not completed due to rain and both teams received three points each. Andhra, which enjoyed a fair chance of getting the top spot before the commencement of the match, finished with 24 points, followed by Hyderabad and Kerala with 17 points each and Goa with six. Karnataka restricted Goa to 243 in its second knock and set itself a victory target of 116. But the easy target quickly turned into an uphill task when medium pacer Chandu Laxman picked up three wickets with the score at 14. He struck two successive blows, removing opener G. Nidhuvan caught by Kasinath at point and then bowling H.T. Sudheer Rao. Bharat Chipli denied Laxman a hat-trick defending the first ball of his next over but fell to next ball, with Goan captain Asnodkar taking the catch at slips. Opener S. Prasanth and Vinay Uthappa steadied the innings but Karnataka lost wickets at regular intervals before scrapping through with a two-wicket win. S.B. Yadav took three wickets. Uthappa made 38. The scores: Goa 196 and 243 in 71.2 overs (Sahil Dhuri 55, Sher Bahadur Yadav 37, Robin D'Souza 25, Udit Patel four for 92) lost to Karnataka 324 for eight decl. and 118 for eight in 42.3 overs (Vinay Uthappa 38, Chandu Laxman three for 21, S.B. Yadav three for 22). Tamil Nadu 428 for eight decl. drew with Kerala 126 in 51.4 overs (R. Surjith 34, Abhishek 32, Abdul Mallick four for 31, G. Vignesh four for 47) and 38 for two in 20 overs. Andhra 266 drew with Hyderabad 257 for seven in 130 overs (Md. Quadir 94, Ibraheem Khaleel 37, T. Suman 34, Anup Pal 33, Imran Khan 31 n.o., Y.
