dated September 26, 1953: Tasks for Ceylon's Premier

From the Editorials: From the time of the rioting in Ceylon last month there has been a persistent whispering campaign that the Prime Minister, Mr. Dudley Senanayake intended to resign, because he was not able to stand up to the physical strain of his high office. All such rumours have been set at rest by his statement two days ago that he was not resigning. From the time he succeeded his father as Prime Minister of Ceylon, some sections of his own party do not seem to have reconciled themselves entirely to his occupying an office — which one or two more senior members felt was their due owing to their longer period of service in politics. But in the general elections in Ceylon held after his father's death, his party was returned to power with a comfortable majority and this must be interpreted as the country's continuing faith in him. With complete support from his party, he should be in a better position to tackle outstanding Indo-Ceylon problems. The bill to amend Ceylon's Immigration Act, which is causing so much tension, seems to be due for being introduced afresh in the Ceylon Parliament. At one stage it was suggested that political uncertainty centring on Mr. Senanayake's future might cause the Government to postpone consideration of amending the legislation. We would much rather prefer that the decision not to proceed with this amendment to the immigration laws be based solely on the Ceylonese Government's desire to do nothing unfriendly which might interfere with an early and amicable settlement of outstanding issues.
