Five undertrials escape from Kolkata jail

Kolkata Sept. 25. Five undertrials, including a Myanmarese accused in the sensational narcotics bust from the former CBI joint director, U.N. Biswas' Salt Lake residence, escaped from the high-security Dum Dum central jail today, according to the DIG (HQ) of Police, N.C. Ghosh.

The undertrials used a ladder to scale the wall before escaping, Mr. Ghosh said. The accused in the narcotics bust case Baikha Khema, and Sheikh Binod, another accused in a number of murder and abduction cases, were among the escapees. The police had earlier arrested Binod from a North Kolkata nursing home in 2000 after a strenuous hunt. The other three escapees were stated to be Binod's accomplices. — PTI
