The State-level celebrations will be at Ravindra Bharati with the participation by the Governor, S. B. Barnala, as the chief guest and with the Minister concerned, M. Manikumari, in the chair. According to the department's Commissioner, R. Sundaravadan, who announced this at a press conference here today, the action plan would aim at building up a "brain bank" out of older people to use their rich experiences in life and in different fields for common good. The material benefits mentioned in the action plan include opening of geriatric wards in Government headquarters hospitals starting with Gandhi Hospital here, housing facility, priority for health, and "fast track" moving facility for them at all the counters where queues is a must, and barrier-free access at Government offices, etc.
Top award for ophthalmologist Meanwhile, city-based ophthalmologist Anil Kumar Mandal of the L. V. Prasad Eye Institute, has been awarded the Shanthi Swarup Bhatnagar Award for the year 2003 in the field of medical sciences. Dr. Mandal is a specialist in glaucoma of the eye, particularly in children, and has successfully managed this vision-threatening disease in over 400 infants. He has also popularised new surgical and management techniques suited to the Indian population.
