Brahmotsavam off to colourful start

By Our Staff Reporter

TIRUMALA SEPT. 27. "Dwajarohanam" was today performed in the temple of Lord Venkateswara, signalling the commencement of the nine-day annual "Brahmotsavam."

The celestial cloth flag with the imprint of Lord "Garuda" - the celestial carrier of Lord Vishnu, was hoisted atop the sacred golden flag post (Dwajasthambham) situated inside the temple complex, at the auspicious "Kumbha Lagnam," between 5 pm and 5.20 pm, this evening, amidst chanting of Vedic hymns by temple priests.

The entire temple town was gripped with religious fervour.

Earlier, the priests recited hymns extracted from the scriptures, eulogising the valour and courage of Lord Garuda, besides carrying out specials rituals like Abhishekam, Naivedhyam and Mangala Harathi, to the idol of Lord Garuda embossed on the peetam of the Dwajsthambham, followed by Asthanam and Vishesha Samarpana to the processional deities at Tirumalaraya Mandapam, situated inside the temple complex.

Prior to the `Dwajarahanam' festival, the processional deities of Lord Malayappa Swamy flanked by his two divine consorts - Sri Devi and Bhu Devi apart from the Parivar Devathas like - Anantha, Gaurda, Chakrathalwar and commander-in Chief, Lord Viswaksena, were taken around the four mada streets, of the temple town in a grand procession.

According to mythology, Lord Garuda goes round the temple complex, extending "invitation" to all gods, heavenly bodies, rishis and the entire devatha community to participate in the Brahmotsavam.

The Dwajarohanam festival was followed by the Pedda Sesha Vahanam in the night.

The processional deities mounted atop the seven-hooded pedda sesha vahanam were taken out in a colour procession around the mada streets.
