S. Koreans oppose U.S. plea

By P. S. Suryanarayana

SINGAPORE Sept. 27. Protest rallies were held across South Korea today urging the President, Roh Moo-hyun, not to accede to a request from the U.S. for the deployment of combat troops in Iraq. Thousands took to the streets in the country whose military alliance with the U.S. has survived the end of the Cold War.

In Seoul, the protesters said despatch of troops would only "strengthen the U.S. occupation rule'' in Iraq.

On September 17, Mr. Roh had said in Seoul that a decision on troops would depend on opinion in his country.

Mr. Roh's comment was read as an indication of his second thoughts on the issue.

The U.S. was seen to require the South Korean troops, along with those from other countries, with or without a planned new U.N. resolution on this subject.
