Journalist succumbs to her injuries

By Our Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI SEPT. 27. The 32-year-old woman journalist who was hit by a speeding Santro car near Pragati Maidan here on Friday succumbed to her injuries in Lohia Hospital on Saturday.

Kanchana, a sub-editor with the Hindi daily "Amar Ujala", had been admitted to Lohia Hospital with serious head injuries on Friday around 4-45 p.m. She succumbed to her injuries around 11 a.m. today.

Her body could not be taken to Lady Hardinge Medical College for post-mortem as by the time the police received the body, the mortuary had closed. Saturdays are half-day for the hospital staff. The police have now requested the LHMC authorities to conduct the post-mortem on Sunday. Cremation is likely to take place at Nigambodh Ghat around 4 p.m. on Sunday. Her husband, Avdhesh Kumar, is a well- known columnist in Hindi and the couple were expecting their first child. Kanchana was seven months pregnant.

Kanchana had gone to file her income-tax returns at Pragati Maidan when the car coming from the Appu Ghar side rammed into her near Gate No.2 of Pragati Maidan on Mathura Road around 4-30 p.m. She was thrown several feet up into the air and had landed on the head. The driver of the car, who escaped from the scene, was intercepted by a Police Control Room van near Nizamuddin Bridge. Meanwhile, Joginder Singh, son of Gurcharan Singh, a resident of Jangpura, who was arrested on charges of rash and negligent driving on Friday, was released on bail on Saturday. Joginder had gone to Appu Ghar, reportedly with a couple of friends, and was on his way back home when he hit Kanchana, who was crossing the road to go to Pragati Maidan.
