Maldives police chief sacked

COLOMBO Sept. 27. The Maldives President, Maumoon Abdul Gayoom, has sacked the country's police chief as the aftermath of a prison uprising and subsequent riots overshadows his upcoming re-election, said a resident, citing an official announcement.

The sacking of Brigadier Adam Zahir came as the President's Office said in a statement a fourth person died from wounds suffered in a crackdown on the prison uprising last week.

``Yes, it was announced that he was stepping down,'' the resident, who declined to be identified, said from the capital Male on Saturday.

Mr. Zahir, commissioner of police and deputy head of the National Security Service ``has been transferred to a civilian post as executive director at the Ministry of Information, Arts and Culture,'' said the anti-government maldivesculture. com web site. — Reuters
