The courts will have floodlight facilities, change-rooms, and a spectator gallery. Initially, the KSLTA will provide balls and rackets for use in courts. It will also appoint one or two coaches to train the players. According to sources in the KSLTA, the courts will be handed over to the local residents' association for maintenance. A nominal fee will be charged from the players every time they use the court. It may be noted that the BMP had initially decided to hand over 22 playgrounds to the KSLTA for setting up tennis courts. But the number of grounds was reduced to six after members, including those from the ruling party, opposed it. Later, it was again decided to hand over 12 grounds. A memorandum of understanding (MoU) between the BMP and KSLTA was also signed recently and the association formally launched the programme on Friday. Following an order from the Chief Minister, S.M. Krishna, who is also the KSLTA President, the Mayor, C.M. Nagaraj, tried to get the BMP Council's consent for handing over the grounds in March this year. As he could not get the subject directly approved by the council, the Mayor got it recommended by the Standing Committee on Taxation and Finance (T&F). It was only in August that the council approved it.
