By Our Hockey Correspondent
The challenge from Japan was no doubt spirited, but the Koreans displayed superior craft and consistency to exert pressure on the rival defence. Hyo Sik put the Koreans ahead, and briefly Japan enjoyed parity from a goal by Iwadate. Lee Jung Seon put the team in the lead for 2-1 at half-time. Lee Jung Seon then enhanced it to 3-1 before Katayama reduced the leeway. In the final minute, Lee scored again to complete his hat-trick. The last bronze for Korea came in 1989, and since then in the two editions at Hiroshima and Kuala Lumpur, the Koreans had taken the gold. Sultan Azlan Shah, President, Asian Hockey Federation, gave away the trophy and the medals. Sandeep Michael was delcared the most promising player, while Sohail Abbas of Pakistan was the Player of the Tournament. Paksitan also got the Fair Play Trophy. The final placings: 1. India, 2. Pakistan, 3. Korea, 4. Japan, 5. Malaysia, 6. China, 7. Hong Kong, 8. Bangladesh. Meanwhile, the Malaysian national team has been instructed to assemble on October 15. This is an indication that the national squad is being prepared for the Afro-Asian Games in Hyderabad from October 24. Officials sources indicated today the Malaysians would not be undertaking the programmed tour of Australia.
