By Karthik Subramanian
The resolution, aimed at restructuring the property tax system, was withdrawn from the agenda, taking several councillors by surprise. The Deputy Mayor, `Karate' R. Thiagarajan, said it had to be withdrawn as the subject required further discussion. To a question whether tax restructuring would take place in the present half-year, the Commissioner, M.P. Vijayakumar, who spoke to a section of the media after the meeting, said it was left to the State Government. He did not want to speculate. The resolution, which was earlier approved by the civic body's Standing Committee for Taxation and Finance, sought to revise the property tax structure for the city and adopt a self-assessment model. Opposition parties, including the Congress, the BJP and communists, welcomed the decision to defer the resolution. The meeting, however, turned chaotic with political slanging, primarily between the Deputy Mayor and DMK members. Mr. Thiagarajan declared passed all 48 resolutions without any discussion, leading to protests from the Opposition parties. The DMK councillors tore copies of the resolutions and raised slogans condemning his `undemocratic' attitude.
