Caffeine, pseudo-ephedrine to go out of banned list

By Our Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI SEPT 30. Caffeine and pseudo-ephedrine will go out of the banned stimulants list when the new World Anti Doping Code and its standards come into force from January 1 next year.

According to the Member-Secretary, Anti Doping Commission of India (ADCOI), Dr Ashok Ahuja, the WADA Executive, at its meeting in Montreal on Monday, had finalised the revised list of banned substances and, as expected, caffeine and pseudo-ephedrine had been removed from the current list under the Olympic Movement Anti Doping Code (OMADC).

Both caffeine and pseudo-ephedrine are found widely in several common products and thus there are innumerable cases every year where the sportspersons take the convenient plea that they had inadvertently consumed the substance. Caffeine, apart from it being available in plenty in coffee,

is also found in coke, while pseudo-ephedrine is a constituent of several common cold medications.

With WADA proposing a minimum two-year ban for all doping violations (with exceptions in the case of some classes of stimulants) it was widely felt that some concessions would have to be given to the sportspersons to take care of the inadvertent use.
