Motor workers' strike total

By Our Special Correspondent

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM Sept. 30. The strike called by a joint action council of motor workers' unions evoked an overwhelming response all over the State today.

Goods vehicles, private buses, taxis and autorikshaws kept off the road in all the districts. The strike did not affect the movement of private cars, two-wheelers and KSRTC buses.

But for a couple of incidents, the strike was peaceful. In Kasargod, two trucks defying the strike call came in for stoning. In Thiruvananthapuram, an autorikshaw was attacked.

The 24-hour strike, which began at midnight yesterday, was to press for the implementation of a comprehensive transport policy in the State. The joint action council also wanted the Government to amend the Motor Vehicles Act to remove certain provisions causing difficulties for the workers and rectify the anomalies in the welfare scheme for them. All major unions such as the CITU, AITUC, INTUC, BMS, UTUC, STU and AICTU were involved in the strike. The motor workers took out a procession in Thiruvananthapuram in the morning.
