Police action against Dalits condemned

By Our Staff Reporter

KURNOOL Sept. 30. Supporters of CPI(M) staged a rasta roko at the new bus stand here on Tuesday to protest against lathicharge by police on the CPI(M) leaders and Kula Vivaksha Vyathireka Porata Samithi volunteers at Hyderabad. The party district secretary, T. Shadrak, condemned the lathicharge saying that the party men were demonstrating demanding the constitution of SC, ST commission. It was unfortunate that the Government was trying to suppress the people's voice. The protesters burnt the effigy of the Chief Minister, N. Chandrababu Naidu, and held up traffic for an hour.

Our Cuddapah Staff Reporter writes: leaders of the SFI and the Awaaz on Tuesday condemned the brutal lathicharge on Kulavivaksha Vyatireka Porata Sangham leaders and activists at Hyderabad when they staged `Chalo Assembly'. The SFI district joint secretary, Y. Rajasekhara Reddy, and the Awaaz district convener, S. Maqbool Basha, in separate statements, alleged that Dalits who staged the protest were beaten up indiscriminately, and several injured. Charging the Government with miserably failing in implementing the Justice Punnaiah Commission recommendations, they accused the Government of using force against the downtrodden sections in a bid to stifle them.

Threat to intensify stir

In Anantapur, the district committee of Kula Vivaksha Vyathireka Porata Committee has warned the Government of intensifying agitation, if it fails to appoint the chairman and members to the SC, ST Commission in the State. The committee staged a rasta roko near the bus stand here today in protest against the police lathicharge on the activists of the committee in Hyderabad yesterday. The district secretary of the committee, H. Venkatesh, condemned the lathicharge and termed it inhuman.

On the Chief Minister's reported remarks that there was no need to put up such a show for a minor problem Mr. Venkatesh said it reflected the his sincerity towards Dalits. He warned the Government that they would intensify the agitation all over the State if the SC, ST Commission was not activated.

CM's effigy burnt

In Nellore functionaries of the CITU and other affiliated bodies burnt the effigy of the Chief Minister at the bypass road centre, in Balaji Nagar, here today. They earlier staged a rasta roko.
