Six-wkt. win for Karnataka

By Our Sports reporter

BANGALORE Sept. 30. Karnataka scored a six-wicket victory over Tamil Nadu in the Ghulam Ahmed Trophy South Zone under-19 tournament match that concluded at the Chinnaswamy Stadium here on Tuesday.

In a low scoring match, Karnataka did suffer the jitters while chasing a target of 112 on the third and final day's afternoon session and with the top-order succumbing with rash shots against the spin. But Devaraj Patil (30 n.o.) and R. Jonathan (21 n.o.) secured victory with an unbeaten 53-run fifth-wicket partnership.

Earlier, Tamil Nadu failed to add much to its four-run first innings lead and succumbed to spinners Vinoo Prasad and Ryan Ninan while mustering a second innings score of 107 in 66 overs.

The Karnataka chase seemed on course with openers Robin Uthappa (22) and Pavan Gargi (21) promising more but the advent of leg-spinner M.P. Rajesh slowed the runs. And the results were immediate as Robin perished with a needless hit towards mid-wicket while next-man in M. Nidish flopped playing inside the line and snicking one into H. Gopinath's gloves.

The alarm bells resurfaced as Gaurav Dhiman played a sweep and was trapped by Shyam Shivakumar but with Devaraj Patil and Jonathan holding firm in the end, Karnataka was saved the blushes.

In the other matches, Kerala defeated Goa by six-wickets at the IAF Ground while in a rain-marred game at the RWF Ground, Hyderabad had to rest content with a 56-run first innings lead in its drawn encounter against Andhra.

The scores: Tamil Nadu 165 in 76.2 overs and 107 in 66 overs (K. Shrivasudevadas 40, N. Vinoo Prasad four for 33, Ryan Ninan three for 50) lost to Karnataka 161 in 75.5 overs and 112 for four in 29.3 overs (Devaraj Patil 30 n.o.).

Andhra 74 in 34.1 overs and 127 for eight in 62 overs (V. Abraham 35, A.G. Pradeep 29, M.P. Arjun six for 36) drew with Hyderabad 130 for five declared in 53 overs.

Goa 200 in 88.4 overs and 68 in 34.1 overs (S. Aneesh four for 20) lost to Kerala 174 in 79.2 overs 95 for four in 42 overs (C.M. Thejes 34 n.o., B. Saurabh three for 24).
