Ranked players continue to fall

VIJAYAWADA Sept. 30. The overthrow of ranked players continued in the third round of the Immortal Five FIDE-rating chess tournament at the Indira Gandhi Municipal Corporation stadium here on Tuesday.

Standing tall after one such conquest was tiny Mahendra Venkat. Not all of four feet and just eight years of age, he toppled Ravindra Raju, whose ELO rating is 2018. The bubbly little fellow then let his feat speak for itself, declining to talk of his win.

Half a dozen moves into a game of Alekhine defence, Venkat went for Bf4, not the best of moves, that resulted in a double pawn on f file and on the 14th, a castling on Queenside. Playing black,

Ravindra preferred Ra4 on the 36th instead of Rh1 check. The passive play persisted in by Ravindra robbed him of the initiative and the game.

Another un-rated player to make a mark was M.R. Lalith Babu, who defeated D.V. Ganesh (1974).

Following Babu's English opening, the duo exchanged queens on the eighth move itself. White doubled his rooks, wresting control of the open d file. On the 28th, Black's flawed Be7 saw him lose a Bishop five moves later and resign immediately after.
