Chess
By Our Special Correspondent
Kiran Monisha, who defeated Kruthika Nadig in the National junior girls' chess championship in Vijayawada on Tuesday.
In a game of Sicilian defence classical variation, Nadig played Nd5 on the 13th, giving her piece but recovering it four moves later. Monisha's offer of her rook for bishop and pawn was accepted by Nadig, landing the latter in trouble and making her king's position vulnerable. To lengthen the contest, white gave her queen for rook on the 22nd, but chose to resign five moves later. I. Ramya Krishna acquitted herself honourably with a draw against top-seeded Eesha Karvade in a game that went into Slav defence exchange variation. Neither showed enterprise, even repeating some moves, before calling a truce on the 24th. In a French defence b3 variation game, Anuprita Patil gave up a pawn on the third move to wrest the initiative against Y. Prathiba. Patil, playing white, got an open g file on the 21st but failed to make the most of it. Black sacrificed a knight on the 25th to open a file for attack, while white missed a winning continuation 10 moves later, playing Qg6 instead of cd5. Nothing much came of black's counter attack save a few repetitive moves after which the rivals settled for a draw on the 39th. Important results (fourth round): Anuprita P. 3.5 drew with Y.
