Collector meets Muthumari

By Our Special Correspondent

MADURAI SEPT. 30. The Madurai Collector, B.Chandra Mohan, today visited Keezha Urappanur in the district, and met the Dalit woman, P. Muthumari, allegedly subjected to sexual harassment on September 22, and obtained a feedback from her.

He and the Superintendent of Police, Avi Prakash Sinha held enquiries with persons belonging to both sides.

In a press release, the Collector said legal action would be taken against persons responsible for attacking Muthumari and throwing faeces-mixed water at her.

A probe by a panel, headed by the district revenue officer, had begun, he said.

Following a complaint lodged by the victim, a case was registered by the Tirumangalam (Town) police on September 23 under Sections 323, 354 and 355 IPC and Section 3 (1) (x) of the SC-ST (prevention of atrocities) Act, 1989, Dr. Chandra Mohan said.

One of the accused, Raja, was arrested and remanded to judicial custody. The police were looking for his wife, Vijaya.

He said it was not a caste clash but a result of a problem "confined to two families".

All other residents were living in harmony, he claimed.
