Born on October 9, 1909 to a famous Chennai lawyer Dr. Swaminadhan and a veteran woman Member of Parliament, Ammu Swaminadhan, Mr. Swaminadhan completed his M.A in Oxford and became a Bar-at-Law and joined the Inner Temple in 1935. In a career spanning more than six decades (1935 to 1997), Mr. Swaminadhan served as Crown Prosecutor for the Madras State and as a senior Central Government Standing Council. He was appointed Advocate-General of the then Madras State in 1969, a post he held for seven years. He practised in criminal and civil law as also Constitutional Law. He had also served as president of the Advocates Association and the Madras Bar Association and was recognised for his legal acumen. Capt. Lakshmi Sehgal, who served in the Indian National Army and was fielded by the Left parties as a Presidential candidate, and danseuse Mrinalini Sarabhai are his sisters. An avid sports lover, Mr. Swaminadhan was associated with the Equestrian Federation of India, the Madras Race Club and the Tamil Nadu Cricket Association. He was also associated with many leading companies in Chennai. Mr. Swaminadhan was involved with the Scouts Movement and had served as a patron of Bala Mandir, a social welfare organisation here. He is survived by two sons and two daughters. The funeral will be held here tomorrow.
