Tamil Nadu-Chennai
By Our Staff Reporter
A special team was formed by the city police to investigate cases of car theft in the past four years and the team first collected details of all those involved in vehicle theft throughout the State. The team interrogated some of them and was able to recover only two-wheelers initially. The police team that was formed under G.Karthikeyan, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Kilpauk) observed that the group followed a similar pattern. They had targeted mostly grey and silver coloured vehicles and used to steal cars late in the night after breaking open the main gate, while the inmates were asleep. Following clues, the special team conducted investigations at Erode, Namakkal, Tiruppur, Salem and Coimbatore and posed as "car brokers" in search of used cars. Police first arrested Saravanan and Radhakrishnan who reportedly confessed to having stolen cars along with Sivachandran. The accused sold the cars to people mostly in Salem district. Following their arrest the team was able to recover 33 cars and today, the city Police Commissioner, K.Vijay Kumar, handed over the keys of the vehicles to their owners. Police officials said the owners of a few vehicles were yet to be identified.
