Gandhi prize for Vaclav Havel

NEW DELHI
OCT. 1.
The former president of the Czech Republic, Vaclav Havel, will be awarded the Gandhi Peace Prize for 2003 for his contribution to world peace and upholding human rights through Gandhian means in the most difficult of situations. A decision to this effect was taken by the five-member jury chaired by the Prime Minister, Atal Bihari Vajpayee.
The Prize carries a cash component of Rs. 1 crore and a citation. Given annually for outstanding work and contribution to social, economic and political transformation through non-violence and other Gandhian methods, the previous awardees include the former president of Tanzania, Julius K. Nyerere, the founder president of the Sarvodaya Movement in Sri Lanka, A.T. Ariyaratne, and the former president of South Africa, Nelson Mandela.
Other members of the jury are the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Sonia Gandhi, the Chief Justice of India, V.N. Khare, the former president, R. Venkataraman, and the former Prime Minister, I.K. Gujral.
