Tension at Kottarakara on the eve of Karunakaran's visit

By Our Staff Reporter

KOLLAM Oct. 1. Tension prevails at Kottarakara on the eve of the visit of the senior Congress leader, K. Karunakaran. He is scheduled to reach Kottakara tomorrow to participate in a `Gandhi Sandhesa Yatra' on the occasion of Gandhi Jayanthi.

An arch put up by `I' group supporters at Chanthamukku, near Kottarakara, to welcome Mr. Karunakaran, was seen partially burnt this morning. This created some tense scenes.

The `I' group leaders were quick to blame the `A' group for the development. The KPCC secretary, G. Rathi Kumar, while talking to mediapersons at Kottarakara even named some `A' leaders as those responsible for the mischief. Along with other `I' group leaders, he lodged a complaint with the Kottarakara police.

However the `A' group leaders in the area denied any role in this development. The group leaders, Muraleedharan Nair and Alex Mathew, said that they suspected the incident to be the handiwork of the `I' group to deliberately create tension in the area and make political capital out of it.

The `Gandhi Sandesha Yatra', organised by the `I' group, is widely seen here as a tit-for-tat programme to the anti-war demonstration organised by the `A' group at Kottarakara some time back.

Mr. Karunakaran is also scheduled to address a public meeting at Kottarakara in connection with the yatra. The police are maintaining a vigil.
