By Our Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI OCT. 1. The President, A.P. J. Abdul Kalam and the Vice-President Bhairon Singh Shekhawat have called upon the people to rededicate themselves to Mahatma Gandhi's philosophy of truth, non-violence and tolerance. In a message on the eve of the Gandhi Jayanti, the President said that Mahatma Gandhi had taught ``us that the nation was bigger than individuals, or any religious institution or any political system.'' Dr. Kalam appealed to his compatriots to work for making the nation happy, prosperous and safe with unity of minds.

In his message, the Vice-President said that Mahatma Gandhi had served the cause of emancipation of the deprived and the oppressed and strengthening communal harmony. ``Gandhi Jayanti reminds us of his ideals, which have the power to rid mankind of evil and moral dilemmas,'' Mr. Shekhawat said.
