Madanasri stuns Saheli

By Our Special Correspondent

G. Madanasri makes a move on way to victory over Saheli Nath in the National junior girls' chess championship at the IGMC Stadium in Vijayawada on Thursday.

VIJAYAWADA Oct. 2 . G. Madanasri stunned Asian junior bronze medallist Saheli Nath in the sixth round of the National junior girls chess championships at the Indira Gandhi Municipal Corporation stadium here on Thursday.

Saheli, a National A player, got off to an irregular opening and had sufficient material advantage by a good combination at the 18th turn. Where she bungled was in losing her bishop on C3, nine moves later. Madanasri made the most of that mistake and wrapped up the contest in 35 moves.

Mahima Rajmohan held defending champion P. Priya to a creditable draw. Mahima set off to a Guico Pinio opening with Priya trying hard to seize the initiative. The former, however, defended herself ably. After exchange of all major pieces the pair settled for a draw on the 32nd.

In response to Nabeela Farheen's d4 opening, N. Sandhya opted for king's Indian defence Samish variation. Rolling all her pawns, Sandhya's assault packed power initially but weakened in mid game. Capitalising on Sandhya's depleted attack, Nabeela strengthened her position considerably. Two pawns up, white won in 35 moves.

In a Dutch defence game, Chandrahawsa, playing white, sacrificed a pawn on the 19th to launch an attack on kingside. Prathiba not only defended well but also through tactical play gained material advantage. Capturing a queen for rook and bishop, Prathiba clinched the game in 38 moves.
