The bandh was complete in the state capital with most of commercial establishments, shops, petrol pumps and cinema houses remaining closed and skeletal traffic plying on the road.
Kamala Pant, convener of Uttarakhand Sanyukt Sangharsh Morcha (USSM), an umbrella organisation of 20 political and social parties, which gave the call, claimed that the bandh complete in the state.
The bandh has been called against the acquittal of Anant Kumar Singh, the then District Magistrate of Muzaffarnagar on whose orders several agitationists participating in the Uttarkhand statehood movement, were allegedly killed in police firing, she said.
The bandh has received active support from top Congress leaders with Industrial Development Minister Kishor Upadhyay and party General Secretary Dhirendra Pratap demanding jobs for the family members of the victims of Muzzafarnagar firing.
Reports coming from different parts of the state said the bandh evoked mixed response with Srinagar in Garhwal region and Almora in Kumaon region observing complete bandh.
Though Nainital High Court recalled its order to acquit Singh recently, Pant said the bandh was convened so that all those persons responsible for the carnage did not go unpunished. -- PTI
