He was presiding over a function organised to inaugurate a senior citizens' cell set up by the District Police to mark World Elders' Day celebrations at the Sadbhavana Hall of the Police Department here on Wednesday. The function was organised by the A.S.M. Trust, which runs Home Again for senior citizens, and the Police Department. Jayaram, Deputy Commissioner, inaugurated the cell. He said most families disintegrated in the absence of elders. He regretted that social security legislation for senior citizens was yet to be formulated in the country. He urged the financial institutions to offer a higher rate of interest on the deposits made by the elders, especially pensioners. Hemanth Nimbalkar, Superintendent of Police, said the cell had a committee comprising the Superintendent of Police, the Additional Superintendent of Police, and the Deputy Superintendents of Police of all sub-divisions. The committee would coordinate with Home Again. A meeting would be held to discuss the problems faced by senior citizens. The jurisdictional officers would be asked to take action on the complaints by senior citizens. Dr. Nagaratna welcomed the gathering. Hampanna of Eenamma Kannada Naadu was felicitated. Pampapathi Gavai and Trishuli, senior citizens, rendered vocal Hindustani music. T.S. Jambunath, honorary secretary of Pensioners' Society, spoke.
