SLP to meet Bombay Gymkhana

By Our Special Correspondent

MUMBAI Oct. 2. Sri Lankan Police (SLP) capitalised on misplaced aggression by Chennai Cheetahs' Tonga stars to win 40-24 (half-time 15-10) on Thursday for a place in Saturday's final of the Castle Lager All-India & South Asia rugby tournament (co-sponsored by Orange) at the Bombay Gymkhana.

The second semifinal saw host Bombay Gymkhana turning on their power-play to quell Greater Mumbai Police 72-0, inspired by a hat-trick of tries from Mufaddal Indorewala.

Tongan Joseph Vaka punched his rival in retaliation for a tackle with five minute left in the first half. He was joined by fellow Tongan Alex Taka in the ensuing melee after a halt in play, jostling referee Salim Tybjee. Both the players were shown yellow cards and team-mate Satish M later joined them on the sidelines for a late tackle.

The Sri Lankans took advantage of their depleted rivals to surge into the lead with three tries, the culmination of pacy and powerful play. Anura Fernando scored two tries, while Vijeweera managed two conversion plus a penalty to the take the fight out of Chennai Cheetahs, for whom captain Emil Vartazarian scored from three conversions and one penalty.

Bombay Gymkhana was too superior for the Mumbai cops from the outset. Muffaddal and Junaid Malik tore through the opposition on either flanks, the latter making his mark with two tries and six conversions.

Ali Reza, Ikram Buttwala, Jassi Johal, Tushar Bhandari, Nasser Husain, Mukarram Faizulabhoy and Faisal Siddique also scored.

The results:

Sri Lankan Poice 40 (Anura Fernando 2 tries, Muthu Shankar, Galle Ville, Muthu Malle, Nizam, Vijeweera 2 conversions, 1 penalty) bt Chennai Cheetahs 24 (Alex, Taka, Joseph Vaka, Masileo Leka 1-t each, Emil Vartazarian 3-c, 1-p).

Bombay Gym 72 (Muffaddal Indorewala 2 tries, Junaid Malik 2, Ali Reza, Jassi Johal, Ikram Buttwala, Tushar Bhandari, Mukarram Faizulabhoy, Nasser Husain, Faisal Siddique 1 each, Junaid Malik 6 conversions) bt GMP 0. H-T: 55-0.
